Wed / 2 Jan. 2019 – ANNOUNCEMENT!
With only a few weeks remaining until departure for the tip of South America next door to Antarctica, Foundation for Youth fund-raising adventurers Walter Glover and Nancy Conner are immersed amid intense training efforts, packing lists, vaccinations, and finalizing details.
And in a welcome last minute surprise, they have been joined by Walter’s cousin, Pilar French, a lawyer from Portland, Oregon. Pilar, a breast cancer survivor, recently completed a 100 mile mountainous trek and climb of Mont Blanc across France, Switzerland and Spain. Pilar is originally from Indianapolis.
The trio will be in Patagonia, a region within the rugged and majestic area of Chile and Argentina. They will trek and climb 70 miles across the two countries. Though not a mountain climb as such, they will cumulatively ascend 11,000 feet. They will strap on crampons and perform a day hike across a glacier near the Straits of Magellan, sea kayak for an afternoon, and finish up with a 20 mile mountain bike ride. In between they will hob nob with a penguin colony of 60,000 breeding pairs on a protected island uninhabited by humans.
Southern Chile and Argentina’s windswept plains and icy peaks were made famous by navigators and explorers including Francis Drake, Charles Darwin and Ferdinand Magellan, The majestic country of the southern territory, near Cape Horn, feature one of the most famous mountainscapes in the world, Torres del Paine (Towers of Blue) – believed to be the highest natural cliff faces in the world. Glacial lakes, mountain river valleys, the Mount Fitz Roy area of Argentina, icebergs with ice calving into deep blue lakes, and the famous four day W (for Walter – Not!) Hike are a few of the features the adventurers will experience.
Previous adventures to support FFY sponsored by Walter included the 2017 climb in Peru SA with Greg Scherschel. Last year he and Ed and Vivian Eckerly made the England Coast to Coast Walk.
Glover this year is joined by Nancy Conner, Columbus, for her first international adventure. An ardent hiker, she has trekked across much of the United States including hikes in 2018 in the Allegheny and Smoky Mountains.
